How Shopify Fees Work in 2026
Shopify's fee structure is simpler than marketplace platforms like Etsy or Amazon. You pay a monthly plan fee plus credit card processing on each order. If you use Shopify Payments (their built-in processor), there are no additional transaction fees.
Shopify Payments vs. third-party providers
The single biggest fee decision on Shopify is whether to use Shopify Payments. If you do, you pay only credit card processing (2.5-2.9% + $0.30 depending on plan). If you use PayPal, Stripe, or another provider, Shopify adds an additional transaction fee of 0.6-2% on top of whatever your provider charges.
For most sellers, Shopify Payments is the clear winner. The only reasons to use a third party: Shopify Payments isn't available in your country, or you need a specific payment method it doesn't support.
Which plan is right for your volume?
The math is straightforward. Higher-tier plans cost more per month but charge lower processing rates. The question is: at your volume, do the per-transaction savings outweigh the higher plan cost?
- Starter ($5/mo): 5% processing rate. Only for minimal selling (social media links, buy buttons). Not a real store plan.
- Basic ($39/mo): 2.9% + $0.30. Best for stores doing under ~$33K/month in sales.
- Grow ($105/mo): 2.7% + $0.30. Breaks even vs. Basic at ~$33K/month.
- Advanced ($399/mo): 2.5% + $0.30. Breaks even vs. Grow at ~$147K/month.
- Plus ($2,300/mo): 2.15% + $0.30. Enterprise tier. Breaks even vs. Advanced at ~$543K/month.
Hidden costs most Shopify sellers miss
Shopify's base fees are competitive, but the ecosystem costs add up:
- Apps: Most stores install 5-10 apps for email marketing, reviews, upsells, SEO, etc. These range from $5-100/month each. A typical app stack costs $50-200/month.
- Themes: Free themes exist, but premium themes ($150-350 one-time) typically convert better.
- Domain: ~$14/year through Shopify or your registrar.
- Email: Shopify Email gives 10,000 free emails/month, but most stores outgrow this quickly.
- Transaction fees on refunds: Shopify Payments doesn't refund the processing fee when you issue a refund.
5 ways to reduce your Shopify costs
- Use Shopify Payments to avoid the additional 0.6-2% third-party transaction fee.
- Audit your apps quarterly. Most stores have 2-3 apps they're paying for but not using.
- Upgrade your plan when the math works — use the comparison table above to check.
- Pay annually to save ~25% on your plan cost.
- Negotiate Shopify Payments rates if you're on Advanced or Plus — high-volume merchants can get custom rates.
